After meeting with my class, and doing some further research myself, I gained a much better understanding of what I wanted my font to look like. During class, I met with a classmate and we compared our fonts and decided to try and combine different elements of our that would work together. Hers was a much bolder, rigid, and powerful font that had an intimidating feeling to it, while mine was much smaller and had a colder, icier, look to it. This was her font:
This was my next draft inspired by hers:
It is much bolder and intense than my first draft, yet I still wanted to make the letters more consistent with one another. I also created a mountain-like 'A' which gives the effect of movement due to its angled leg. The 'O's look like eyes because I was inspired by the roller coaster Expedition Everest's font.

Following this, we looked through a variety of fonts on Word to work with as a base font. We also researched Nepali to see how we could incorporate that into our font - there are a lot of sharp edges and angles in many of the characters. I continued to sketch and eventually came up with this:
The triangular nature of the letters resembles mountains, as the escape room will simulate being trapped in the Himalayas. The discontinuities in some of the letters such as the 'P' and 'E' give the feeling of brittle ice. The negative space is also a key feature of this font because when the letters come together to form a word, it looks like an escape game or maze where you have to find your way out. All of these details are what makes this font ideal for an escape room. My next step is to create all of the characters using a software. I am planning to use Calligraphr for this.

  1. I really like the framing of "EscapE" you accomplished with the mirrored E's, as well as adapting the same style from the E into the F design, the parity there really establishes a link between the two letters that we see in our own use of E and F. The angular O is also an interesting concept and lends itself well within the font. My only concern in your design so far is the A and P, I love how they are melded together, but I don't think I'd be able to easily recognize the combination outside of the context of the word "Escape", which is something to think about in terms of clarity.

  2. I can truly see the evolution of your font and specific characteristics that remain throughout it. Looking at the most recent version of the font the letters are still simple, which I like. Many of the letters have a noticeable slope, similar to a mountain like Everest. I feel like consistency between the letters is lost in the “E” because there are no sharp corners and it is less abstract in that way, compared to the other letters. Though, I like the ‘E’ in the ‘THE’ because all of the lines are the same length, instead of staggered.

  3. I think the simplified and geometric style is really nice and lends itself to a more legible typeface. I find that the literal icicles hanging off of the letterforms can sometimes become a bit convoluted if not done just right and I think your typeface strikes the balance of showing off the theme and being yet still being abstract enough to be applicable to almost any case involving mountains or cold. As Greta and Ryan mentioned above, the second E in escape looks really nice as well! My favorite parts has to be the "AP" ligature which looks absolutely stunning!

Great job so far and I can't wait to see your final result!
